# Image credits

Every photograph here is used under a Creative Commons licence that permits commercial use.
Attribution is required by CC BY and is given below; the page footer links here.
**No brand's product photography is used anywhere in this theme.**

These are photographs of **raw materials**, each captioned with what it is. The shop sets them out
beside the bottles so a visitor can smell the parts.

⚠ **They are not an ingredient list and the page must never present them as one.** None of the
three houses publishes a note list this repo can check — Le Labo's own Santal 33 page carries a
single poetic line and no notes, no size and no price at all — so an earlier version of this file
and of the page footer claimed a provenance that does not exist. Do not reintroduce it.

**No file is now rendered twice.** 22 `<img>` tags for 22 files: 18 note tiles and 4 banners. The
pass before this one repeated three files as an opening panel; the opening is a photograph of its
own now and the three scents are links under the headline instead.

⚠ **A banner is atmosphere, and the page never labels it.** It is not captioned, so it makes no
claim — the material tiles are the only images that name what they are. Where a banner happens to
be a note of that bottle (leather, fig, birch, wood) that is a bonus, not the rule; this table says
what each photograph actually is.

The opening banner is **smoke** — perfume's oldest form, and a photograph with a subject in it
rather than a flat texture swatch, which is what the pass before this used. The three shelf
photographs are leather, a fig and birch wood.

**They are photographs beside a bottle, not a statement about the bottle.** The page does not say
Santal 33 contains leather; it says this is what the shop sets out next to it. See the note at the
end of the shelf section, and §7 of the README for why the distinction had to be made explicit.

## Two notes that cannot be photographed literally

`birch smoke` and `musk` are not objects a camera can be pointed at — one is a combustion
product, the other is mostly synthetic in every modern perfume. The tile shows the **source
material** instead: birch bark, and musk mallow (*Malva moschata*), the plant the note is named
after. The caption on the page names the note; this table names what the photograph actually is.
If a client's product ever depends on the distinction, shoot the real thing.

Openverse was queried with `license=cc0,by,pdm` and `license_type=commercial` on 2026-08-12.
Each file is centre-cropped to **760 × 760** at JPEG q76.

**Why 760 and not 440.** The first cut was 440px, sized for a 215px tile. The redesign runs these
photographs edge to edge, where a panel is 205px on a 1440px page but 300px at 900px and 195px on
a phone — and the hero panels are 480px. 760 covers the widest of those on a 2× screen. Heaviest
file **177 KB**, inside the `G3.3 ≤ 200 KB` gate with 23 KB to spare; 18 files, **1,796 KB** in
total, and 21 of the 24 `<img>` tags are `loading="lazy"` (the three hero panels are not, because
they are the first thing on screen).

`birch.jpg` **replaced its source** in this round. The original (Jevgenijs Slihto, BY 2.0) existed
only at 620px in this repo and is no longer findable on Openverse by its Flickr id, so upscaling
was the only way to keep it. It was swapped for a CC0 birch macro instead — 3648 × 5472 at source,
served here from the 960px edition, which is still comfortably above the 760px this theme needs.
CC0 also removes an attribution requirement rather than adding one.

## If you replace these
A real shop photographs its own stock and its own materials — that is always better than a
stock photograph of the same subject, and it removes the attribution requirement entirely.
Swap the file, delete the row, and drop the credit line from the footer.
